Pull your character toward the climax and set up the goal early. A great deal needs to be lost if the goal isn’t attained. In other words, SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE AT STAKE! The goal needs to be essential for the character’s well-being, It needs to bring the protagonist into direct conflict with the goals of the antagonist and should be difficult enough to cause change in the main character.
